Yesterday, in spite of allergies from the deep, dark and beyond, I spent the day birthday party hopping. The first was for Little K. A few months ago her sister celebrated her third birthday with Cinderella and those other Disney princess lot. Little K would just as soon eat the wheels off of Cinderella’s carriage than be bothered with all that fluff. Give her an Oreo and a handful of cheese puffs and she’s good to go.

Yesterday I hung out with a Three Year Old and her 11month old sister. In the first photo V has decided she doesn’t like me very well. She wants her daddy, thank you very much. In the second photo she had just finished dressing up her giant baby doll. Don’t let the tutus fool you. The child is more Roman Centurion than Russian Ballerina. If you’d caught a glimpse of her doing pull ups in the kitchen (there was carrot cake on the counter) you’d believe it.

On Friday and Saturday we hung out with the three Ts. Whenever we visit Miss D and her family she’s always the first at the breakfast table. Here she sits just before the morning meal. She dined on muffins and fruit after declaring the porridge I cooked “Tastes like paper, at the end.”

We’ve been thinking about it for a while now. Trading in the PCs for their trendier, more youthful (if you believe the adverts) cousins. I’ve worked on Macs before and, being a PC girl, could never understand what all the fuss was about. Then I spent Saturday morning feeling up a 24 inch iMac and good grief but that’s a sexy piece of machinery!

Still, I was born frugal - although the husband may argue this point - and am just not sold on the price differential yet. Is the bang worth the buck? If that lovely stimulus cheque wasn’t already spent on more practical things I’d find out. As it is, I still decided to get a little something to satisfy my Apple-Evny. Good one Mr. Jobs.

Wedding Books. Take Two.

Well, looks like someone in Italy likes us. Remember my lament in the last post about not being able to get our old supplier to offer us even remotely reasonable shipping to the States? Well. It’s sorted. The most divine leather wedding books. Unbeatable craftsmanship. So sweet you could almost lick them. (I exaggerate zero percent.)

We’ll still be offering the heirloom albums as well as the books I posted about earlier this week for clients who prefer animal friendly ‘leather’. For the rest of you, interested in full grain leather sourced straight from Italy, we’ve got it. (Photos to come.)

Wedding Books

One of the biggest headaches caused by transplanting a business from one continent to another, is sourcing new suppliers. For the most part, we’ve gotten off easy. A lot of our vendors were based in California and, thanks to the weak dollar, even the international shipping left us with a smile on our face. B&H photo in New York City has been the goto place for most of our gear. It’s like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for photographers. So we’ll not be looking elsewhere any time soon.

But when it came to wedding books we looked only toward Italy. There’s a reason that country’s known for beautiful things. Our books were handmade in the Venetian region and shipped to us in the UK. Since coming to the U.S. we’ve spent many an hour on the lookout for a suitable replacement. (That weak dollar isn’t so great when it’s the Euro you’re after.) For a time, we even pulled the Wedding Books from our wedding package. The idea was ‘Better to offer no product at all, than an inferior one’.

But I think we’ve got it sussed. Beautiful, designer, panoramic-style wedding books. Heavy weight pages that guard against fingerprints, warping or tearing. Made right here in the USA, and used by photographers and artists all over the world. We’ve just designed our first set and are currently reviewing our costs and the man hours involved in order to come up with an appropriate price list. Check back soon.

It’s 2:30a.m. and I’ve been up all night processing pics from the weekend. I’m terribly addicted to this sort of thing. I once spent three hours on one image and then gave it away. If you’re looking for the latest wedding images, go to the proofs page (top right) and enter the password. Every bride and groom has one. Don’t ask me. Ask them.

If you’re just here to have a nose around, then meet ‘Karly’. She’s four and I photographed her very first recital this weekend. I’m not sure how she felt about having a camera stuck in her face. I think it may have chased her out of the ‘zone’ - for her second performance, she channeled Mae West. But I was determined to fill up the new Lexar Professional cards I bought. I’ll tell you about those later. For now,’Karly’.

Mother’s Day. Almost.

In England it’s called Mothering Sunday and it falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent - exactly three weeks before Easter. Historically, it had more to do with Mother Church than Mother May I. In America, where it was imported and first celebrated as a form of social activisim by a woman in Grafton, West Virginia, it’s this weekend.

My photography challenge: Photograph as many mothers as I can. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
